Visiting the Efteling in 30°C Heat: 21 Tips to Stay Cool on a Hot Summer Day

Many people hesitate when temperatures of 30°C (86°F) or higher are forecast. Is it really a good idea to visit the Efteling? Won’t it be far too hot? And where can you cool down during the day?

These are completely understandable questions, especially if you’re visiting with young children.

Let me start by saying this: Summer Efteling is actually my favourite season. I’ve been visiting the Efteling regularly for more than 12 years, and I often visit during hot summer days as well. Yes, it can get warm, but the park offers surprisingly many places where you can escape the heat. From shaded walking paths and water attractions to indoor rides with air conditioning and free water refill stations.

Planning a visit to the Efteling during warm weather? These tips will help you enjoy a much more comfortable day.

1. Bring a Refillable Water Bottle

This may sound obvious, but staying hydrated is essential on hot days.

The good news is that you don’t need to spend the entire day buying bottled water. Throughout the park, you’ll find several free water refill stations where you can top up your bottle. I always bring our Dopper bottle and a straw cup for the kids. It saves money and ensures we always have water with us.

Where Can You Find Free Water Refill Stations in the Efteling?

Some well-known locations include:

  • Symbolica queue
  • Joris en de Draak queue
  • Anton Pieck Square
  • Flying Dutchman Square
  • Toilets near In den Swarte Kat
  • Toilets near Fata Morgana
  • Toilets near Kleine Boodschap
  • Toilets near ’t Gemack

For our international visitors: Dutch tap water is perfectly safe and of excellent quality.

2. Cool Down in the Fairytale Forest

The Fairytale Forest is one of my favourite places on hot days. Many of the paths are shaded by large trees, making it one of the coolest areas in the park.

You can stroll at a relaxed pace past the fairytale scenes while escaping both the crowds and the heat. There are plenty of benches where you can sit and relax, and several food outlets offer refreshing ice cream and drinks.

If you’re visiting with young children, this is the perfect place to take a break before continuing your adventure.

3. Take a Ride on Piraña

Want to cool down quickly? Then Piraña is the obvious choice.

Expect longer queues, as you certainly won’t be the only one with this idea. However, on a hot summer day, a ride through this white-water river attraction can be exactly what you need.

And for those who prefer to stay dry: there are plenty of opportunities to cool off from the sidelines as well. You can spray the boats with the water cannons—and don’t be surprised if a few splashes come your way too!

4. Ride De Vliegende Hollander (The Flying Dutchman)

The Flying Dutchman offers some very welcome cooling on hot days.

Not only because of the splash at the end of the ride, but also because a large part of the attraction takes place indoors. This makes it a great attraction to balance out the heat.

Bonus tip: if some members of your group don’t want to ride, they can grab an ice cream and relax on the waterside terrace while waiting. The view is lovely.

5. Let the Kids Play in Archipel

Visiting with younger children? Then Archipel is a fantastic option.

Children can enjoy water play, climbing and exploring while cooling down at the same time. On warm days, many families gather here to escape the heat for a while. Parents can relax with their feet in the water while the children happily splash around.

The soft rubber-like surface also makes it a safe and comfortable area for energetic little explorers. Consider bringing a spare set of clothes—you may need it.

6. Make Use of the Misting Stations and Water Sprayers

Personally, this is my favourite way to cool down.

While Piraña can leave you soaking wet, the misting stations provide just enough cooling without drenching your clothes. A quick walk through the fine mist can make an immediate difference.

Popular Cooling Spots in the Efteling

  • Fountain at The Goose Girl on Anton Pieck Square
  • Water jets and fountains on Pardoes Promenade
  • Nest! playground (lots of shade and a misting station)
  • Archipel
  • Fountains opposite Station de Oost
  • Piraña exit and water cannons
  • Entrance to Fata Morgana Square

7. Visit Indoor Attractions Between Noon and 4 PM

The midday hours are usually when the sun is at its strongest.

Try scheduling more indoor attractions during this period, such as:

  • Symbolica
  • Droomvlucht (Dreamflight)
  • Villa Volta
  • Vogel Rok
  • Fata Morgana

Not only are these attractions cooler, but they also give you a welcome break from direct sunlight.

8. Take a Break at Fabula

Fabula is one of the most underrated places in the park during hot weather.

You can sit comfortably in an air-conditioned theatre, enjoy the film, and afterwards let the children play in the indoor playground—which is also air-conditioned.

There’s a restaurant on-site as well, making it a pleasant stop for the whole family. And if that’s not enough, there’s an ice cream shop near the exit.

Especially during the hottest part of the day, Fabula is a wonderful place to recharge.

9. Don’t Skip the Diorama

Many visitors walk right past it, but the Diorama is actually an excellent place to cool down.

The indoor environment stays pleasantly cool, and the miniature world is full of fascinating details to discover. When temperatures soar outside, this makes for a perfect short break.

Take ten minutes, slow down, and enjoy the cooler temperature.

10. Relax at Nest!

Nest! is not only fun for children—it’s also a great spot for parents.

There are plenty of seating areas and shaded spots where you can take a break while the children play. Walking barefoot through the cool sand is surprisingly refreshing.

You can grab a snack from the nearby food outlet or enjoy a packed lunch. Nest! also features a misting station, so be sure to take advantage of it.

11. Take a Walk Through the Land of Laaf

The Land of Laaf is another surprisingly pleasant area during hot weather. Thanks to the abundance of trees and greenery, it often feels noticeably cooler than the more open parts of the park.

The area also features covered houses and seating areas where you can enjoy some shade. It’s a lovely place for a relaxed stroll.

Tip: it’s also a great area to visit during rainy weather.

12. Wear Light and Breathable Clothing

Choose lightweight, breathable clothing whenever possible. Not only will you feel more comfortable, but your clothes will also dry faster after riding a water attraction.

Because let’s be honest—you can come off Piraña absolutely soaked. Bringing a spare outfit can be a lifesaver.

13. Take a Ride on the Gondoletta

Sometimes it’s wonderful to simply do nothing for a while.

The Gondoletta offers beautiful views and a relaxing 20-minute boat ride. Thanks to the water and the gentle breeze, it often feels a few degrees cooler here.

The roof on the boats also provides welcome shade during the hottest part of the day.

14. Avoid the Hottest Areas Around Midday

After years of visiting the Efteling, I know there are a few places that can become particularly hot.

In my experience:

  • Pardoes Promenade (between the Grand Hotel and Symbolica)
  • Fata Morgana Square
  • The area around Donkey Stretch
  • The pathway between Piraña and Baron 1898

These locations offer relatively little shade. If possible, visit them early in the morning or later in the afternoon.

15. Don’t Forget a Cap or Sun Hat

A simple cap or sun hat can make a huge difference.

Especially when you’re standing in queues for extended periods, you’ll appreciate the extra protection from the sun. Sunglasses are highly recommended too.

16. Apply Sunscreen Regularly

Even when it seems cloudy.

During a day at the Efteling, you’ll walk far more than you realise. The combination of walking, waiting in queues and spending hours outdoors means you can burn surprisingly quickly.

17. Use the Efteling App Strategically

The Efteling app makes it easy to check waiting times throughout the day.

If you notice that an indoor attraction has a short queue, it can be smart to visit it during the hottest hours. The app also allows you to sort attractions by waiting time, making it easy to plan your route.

You can also use the app to find toilets, restaurants and snack locations, and even navigate directly to them.

18. Don’t Forget to Eat

Hot weather can reduce your appetite, but it’s still important to eat regularly.

Heat, crowds and an empty stomach are rarely a good combination. Ice cream is wonderful, of course, but make sure you also have a proper lunch and some snacks throughout the day.

Find a shady spot, sit down and take your time.

Great Snacks for a Hot Day in the Efteling

Bring foods that contain plenty of water and feel refreshing, such as:

  • Watermelon
  • Grapes
  • Cucumber
  • Apples
  • Pears
  • Strawberries
  • Cherry tomatoes
  • Fruit pouches for children

These snacks are easy to bring along, help you stay hydrated and feel wonderfully refreshing during the warmest hours of the day.

19. Find a Shaded Terrace

Not every terrace is located in direct sunlight.Take a few extra steps to find a shaded table. Sitting down with a cold drink can make a huge difference during a hot day.

The Efteling also has plenty of shaded benches throughout the park, making it easy to find a comfortable place to rest.

20. Stay Until the Evening

This may be my most important tip of all.

Many visitors leave when the temperatures peak, but the Efteling becomes incredibly atmospheric in the evening. The temperature gradually drops, the light becomes softer and the entire park takes on a different character.

This is one of the main reasons why Summer Efteling remains my favourite season.

If your children can manage a longer day, I highly recommend staying until the evening.
